Training on demonstration fields

Tamil Nadu is India's southernmost state. Around 45% of its land is used to grow rice, peanuts, corn, and especially sugar cane. Despite rapid industrialization throughout the state, many people still make their living from agriculture.

Our project targets 900 people living below the poverty line, the vast majority of whom are women who are usually single parents and who have previously earned their living through small-scale activities such as selling snacks, vegetables, or bast mats. The men work as seasonal laborers in agriculture or as day laborers on construction sites.

Our partner organization SEVAI runs 30 training courses in two training centers for these women and men on the production and marketing of agricultural products: vegetable growing, algae farming, beekeeping, mushroom cultivation, poultry farming, etc.
Everyone has the opportunity to apply the knowledge they have acquired in practice on demonstration fields and in production rooms. In addition, training is provided in the manufacture of everyday items, such as mat weaving and textile production.

In the long term, the training will contribute to a significantly improved income situation for the target group. As a further consequence, the project is expected to improve nutrition, health, education, and career opportunities not only for those directly involved, but also indirectly for their families. With an average of five people per household, the project will directly or indirectly benefit around 4,500 people.

Target group

People with no or low income, especially women, in the state of Tamil Nadu.
However, the work of the training centers is also aimed at surrounding schools; young people should be introduced to future income opportunities at an early stage.
